Crafting a Modern Network for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Story City

In March of 2025, Saltech Systems was engaged to design and implement a state-of-the-art network for the newly constructed Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Story City facility. This project aimed to deliver a modern, scalable, and secure network infrastructure to support a diverse range of technologies, ensuring seamless connectivity for educational, recreational, and administrative functions. The result was a cutting-edge network that not only met the facility’s immediate needs but also provided the flexibility to grow alongside the organization’s vision.

The Challenge

During the initial walk-through, Saltech Systems identified a complex set of requirements driven by the facility’s diverse technological needs. The new building housed a variety of spaces, including classrooms, game rooms, an esports arena, and administrative offices, each demanding robust, high-speed, and secure connectivity. The network needed to support multiple device types, from student laptops and gaming consoles to network-enabled security and IoT devices, all while maintaining stringent security standards.
Additionally, the project faced a tight timeline, with the network implementation critical to securing permits and enabling the facility’s grand opening. Any delays in deployment would jeopardize the overall project schedule.

The Vision

Our vision is to expand our current capacity of 11,250 square feet to serve more kids! The updated 18,750 square feet building, located in Ames, will give our current families and new families on our waiting list an improved space and experience!

Our Approach

Network Design

To meet the multifaceted needs of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club, Saltech Systems designed a comprehensive network architecture prioritizing speed, reliability, and security. Our team selected a Unifi-based network infrastructure, leveraging its scalability and centralized management capabilities to support the facility’s diverse environments.

Key Components of the Network Design

High-Speed Connectivity
Deployed Unifi Wi-Fi 6 access points to provide high-bandwidth, low-latency wireless coverage across the facility, ensuring seamless performance for bandwidth-intensive applications like esports streaming and video-based learning in classrooms.

Segmented VLANs
Implemented Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) to segregate traffic for different use cases—classrooms, esports, administrative systems, and guest devices. This approach enhanced security by isolating sensitive administrative data from recreational and guest networks while optimizing bandwidth allocation.

Scalable Infrastructure
Installed Unifi switches and routers to create a backbone capable of handling current demands and future expansions, such as additional IoT devices or new program spaces, without requiring significant reconfiguration.

Centralized Management
Utilized the Unifi Dream Machine with a cloud-based management interface, enabling IT staff to monitor and manage the network in real time, troubleshoot issues, and adjust configurations without external support.

Project Highlights and Strategic Approach

Cost-Effective Solution
To reduce the overall cost for the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Story City, Saltech Systems designed a network that requires no monthly fees, providing a sustainable and affordable solution without compromising quality.

Future-Ready Connectivity
The network infrastructure includes built-in VPN capabilities, allowing the facility to easily expand and secure remote connections as their technological needs grow.

Collaborative Scheduling
By closely coordinating with the builders, Saltech ensured that the network implementation aligned perfectly with the construction timeline, meeting all deadlines and avoiding project delays.

Optimized Wi-Fi Planning
Utilizing the Interspace application, the team strategically planned Wi-Fi access point locations to guarantee comprehensive coverage throughout the facility while staying within budget constraints.

Efficient Budget Management
Despite a limited budget, Saltech Systems delivered a high-performance, scalable network swiftly, demonstrating effective resource management and technical expertise.

Impact

The Unifi-based network design delivered a robust, high-performance infrastructure tailored to the facility’s diverse needs. The VLAN segmentation ensured secure and efficient data flow, while the scalable architecture positioned the Boy’s and Girl’s Club for future growth. Centralized management empowered ours and future teams full control, minimizing operational costs.
The rapid deployment of this network under tight deadlines enabled the facility to meet its permitting requirements and open on schedule, providing a reliable technological foundation for its educational and recreational programs.
